Toby! Have you met Toby? He’s my little baby.
Ever since I bought these cute little dog treat molds, I can’t seem to stop making him cute little treats in fun little shapes!
Treat-making a great activity with the little ones too, and these make fantastic gifts.
Best Kind of Peanut Butter for dogs:
- All-natural peanut butter without added salt or sugar is best for dogs.
- Do not use light or sugar-free peanut butter, as those may have artificial sweeteners (such as xylitol) which is toxic to dogs.
- I like to use Teddy Smooth All-Natural Peanut Butter, which can also commonly be found in grocery stores.
Can Dogs Have Flour?
In short, yes. But flour can post an allergy to some dogs, and flour is certainly not a necessity in their diet, but rather is used as a binding agent in many treat recipes.
If possible, I recommend using Almond flour, because it’s healthy and easy to find at the grocery store.
Healthier Flour Alternatives for Dog Treats:
Grain: Barley, Buckwheat, Millet, Oat, Pea, Quinoa, Rice, Sorghum
Non-Grain: Chickpea, Coconut, Hazelnut, Lentil, Potato
Storage
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
- Freeze for up to 3 months, removing them as you need them and letting them come to room temperature.
Dog Treats as Gifts:
- These treats make fantastic gift ideas and are perfect for giving in these little canisters!
- Treat-making and gift-giving is also a great activity for little ones, (with your assistance of course!)

I use coconut flour because Valen is prone to crystals and almost nd flour is high in oxaltes.
I had to add bit more moisture..about 1/3 c water, but they turned out beautifully.
Great to hear Jeanne, thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment!❤️
Our dog Sandie Claws loves these.
Yayyy! Much love to Sandy💗 Thanks so much for the great review!
I’m planning to make a bunch of these for Christmas gifts! I’ve seen this recipe using 1 cup whole wheat flour rather than almond flour. Is that an acceptable substitute?
Hi Brittany, as long as your dog doesn’t have an intolerance for wheat, you should be all set! This has a little bit more information that you can check out.
Very informative article, thank you!
You are so welcome! 🙂
As a new dig owner, seeing all the dont’s of dog feeding, it became a wee but overwhelming. Times and raising dogs have changed. Seeing the prices of some of the dog treats, I decided to try this idea, added some butternut and used oat flour. No more store bought treats. Best of all the ingredients are fresh, foods you always have in the house. No preservatives as well.
Austin loves them.
Thank you for sharing.
Happy to hear Austin Loves them! Definitely a great way to save some money and know what’s actually in your dogs treats. Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment!❤️
I didn’t have all natural but crunchy peanut butter. Is that a bad option?
I think I’ve used crunchy before as well!
I made these without cutters but I rolled them into small balls. The outside is crusty but the inside is mushy. Is that ok?
I would recommend cooking them all the way through and not leaving the middle soft. That’s the reason for the cookie-style method. ❤️
Thank you. I’m going to try making some of these for my two girls (rescued Maltipoos). I hope they love them and I can stop buying the bagged treats. 🙂
Maltipoos are soooo adorable! I can’t wait for them to try these!😃
Wanted to make this recipe but almonds are toxic to dogs. Not as toxic as a few other nuts, but still toxic.
Hi Lesley, almond flour is generally considered safe for dogs. I recommend checking with your vet before introducing anything new but you should be fine using it. This recipe from Bobs Red Mill also calls for Almond Flour. Of course I wouldn’t recommend putting actual almonds in dog treats.
This was my first ever attempt at making these types of treats for my dog! They were super easy and they turned out delicious. I even tried one very very good!
Hey Rachel! I’m so happy that your dog treats came out well!! I love making this recipe, (my dog loves when I make it even more)!- Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment and a rating, I really appreciate it! -Stephanie
