How rewarding is it to make little dog treats for a little pup in your life?! I’ve been making these treats for years, both for my own dog and for my friend’s dogs. They have everything your little pup could want.
Let’s get into some questions that you may have about the ingredients!
Best Kind of Peanut Butter for dogs:
- All-natural peanut butter without added salt or sugar is best for dogs.
- Do not use light or sugar-free peanut butter, as those may have artificial sweeteners (such as xylitol) which is toxic to dogs.
- I like to use Teddy Smooth All-Natural Peanut Butter, which can also commonly be found in grocery stores.
Best Kind of Flour for Dogs
If possible, I recommend using Almond flour, because it’s healthy and easy to find at the grocery store.
Healthier Flour Alternatives for Dog Treats:
Grain: Barley, Buckwheat, Millet, Oat, Pea, Quinoa, Rice, Sorghum
Non-Grain: Chickpea, Coconut, Hazelnut, Lentil, Potato
Can Dogs Have Milk?
- Just like people, some dogs can digest milk easily and with no issues. Other dogs have trouble, or may be lactose intolerant. This resource goes into greater detail about that.
- In short, be cautious about introducing new foods to your dog for the first time, and always consult a vet when in doubt.

Peanut Butter Bacon Dog Treats
Ingredients
- 1 cup natural creamy peanut butter *See notes
- 3/4 cup nonfat milk
- 1 large egg or 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 2 cups Almond flour *See notes
- 1 Tablespoon baking powder
- 1/3 cup oats (either whole-rolled or quick oats are fine)
- 4 strips cooked bacon roughly chopped
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325F degrees. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, gently mix the peanut butter, milk, and egg together with a large spoon or spatula. Switch to a whisk to make sure no lumps remain. Add the flour and baking powder. You may need to turn the dough out onto the counter and use your hands to work in the flour. Mix in the oats and chopped bacon. The dough is extremely thick and heavy.
- Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out into 1/4" thickness. Cut into shapes or insert into these dog treat molds (I love these)! Arrange on the baking sheets. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until very lightly browned on the bottom. Remove from the oven, and flip the treats to bake the other side for 10-12 more minutes.
- Allow to cool completely before serving to your pup. Store at room temperature or in the
- refrigerator for up to 1 week. Treats freeze well, up to 2 months.

Oh my gosh this is amazinggggg!! I’ve always wanted to make homemade treats for Nigel but he’s so damn picky too that he only likes to all meat ones (aka as the super expensive ones). He snubs his nose to peanut butter and we’ve only found one treat that has peanut butter that he likes, but I will definitely be trying this one too!!
That big ol’ boy is picky too?! Awwwwww!!! Well I’m thinking he should like these if Toby’s love for them is any indication! Sometimes I give Toby treats that even I want to eat, they smell so good, and he’ll just sniff it and have no interest. I’m like, WHAT!? hahaha! 🙂 I was PRAYING he’d like these, it would have been sad to bake them for nothing! Phew!
