These homemade dog treats are an easy baking project for kids and adults and make a great homemade gift idea! They’re made with apples and carrots, and dogs love to eat them up!
It is so much fun to do some baking for your four-legged friend once in a while! My dog absolutely loves these treats, and my toddler absolutely loves making them with me!
But first, let’s get into a few basic questions you may have.
Best Kind of Flour for Dogs
If possible, I recommend using Almond flour, because it’s healthy and easy to find at the grocery store.
Healthier Flour Alternatives for Dog Treats:
Grain: Barley, Buckwheat, Millet, Oat, Pea, Quinoa, Rice, Sorghum
Non-Grain: Chickpea, Coconut, Hazelnut, Lentil, Potato

Apple Carrot Dog Treats
Ingredients
- 2 ½ cup Almond flour *See Notes
- ½ cup oats
- 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
- ½ cup apple peeled and grated (about 1 small apple)
- 1/2 cup carrots peeled and grated
- 1 egg beaten
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- ¼ cup water
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- In one bowl, mix the flour, oats, and brown sugar. In separate bowl, beat the egg and mix in the oil, water.
- Peel and grate apple and carrots and mix into the egg/water mixture. Gradually add wet mixture into flour mixture and stir until a dough has formed. You can add up to ¼ cup additional water but I didn't find it necessary as the apple added a lot of moisture.
- Carefully roll out dough and cut out desired shape. I used a small cap, you could also use these cute dog treat molds!
- Bake for approximately 25-30 minutes, until the treats are firm. Smaller shapes like mine require slightly less cooking time than larger treats.
- Remove them from the oven and let them cook completely prior to sharing with your furry friend : )

I only have whole wheat organic flour. Can I use that?
If your dog is able to consume wheat and flour, then it’s fine 🙂
My dog loved it! she was begging for more!
I’m so happy to hear that Laila! My dog loves these too. Thanks so much for the great review!😍
What kind of oats did you use? Is quick oats ok for this recipe? Thanks!
Yes, quick oats! ☺️
How long is the shelf life on these unfrozen?
Hi Brooke, I would try to use them within 3-5 days. You can also freeze them as well and let them come to room temp before using more! 🙂
I just made this for my French bulldog and Pomeranian. They absolutely loved it.Thank u for this recipe.
Hi Darcy! That is so awesome, I’m glad to hear it!! So nice of you to treat your pup!! -Stephanie
My Angel Linus will be 2 years old on the 19th. He’s quite a character! And the love of my life! ❤🐕!

Hey Jessie! I have no idea how this comment didn’t show up for me until now, (okay let’s face it, I’m sure it showed up and somehow I just missed it!)- But reading it now totally made my day! I’m so happy to hear that you’ll be making these doggie treats, and that you like my human recipes too 😉 !!!! I appreciate you taking the time to reach out!
The dogs love this…what is really funny is the neighbor dog got loose and came to the patio door while these were cooking. I think he wanted some, too! My two LOVE them!!!
Ahhhh hahaahahaha, Jill, that is so funny! Well with dog’s crazy sense of smell the neighbor’s dog probably knew exactly what he was doing, haha! I’m sooo happy that your pups love them as much as mine does! <3 Thank you for taking the time to share and to make me laugh!
I just made these treats for my two puppies and just gave them one each. They are back hassling me for more so i think it is safe to say they love them. My older poodle is a very very fussy eater and he just loves them. Thanks so much for the recipe and it was very easy to make!
Hi Tara!
That is great news! I’m actually glad that you reminded me about this recipe because I have some apples that I need to use before they go bad, this would be perfect!! I’m so glad your pups enjoyed them- my little guy LOVES them! So much better (and healthier) than the store-bought stuff! 🙂 Have a great day!
I just made these and they turned out great! I made mini-sized treats because my dogs are small breeds, and so I baked them for a shorter time. My two little ones seem to love it, which is so rewarding and pleasing to see! Thanks so much for the recipe x
Wahooooo!-Rachel that is awesome!!! My little Morkie was obsessed with these treats, I think it’s time I made another batch! He loves them so much more than anything I’ve bought 🙂 I’m so glad yours worked out well too- thank you for letting me know, made my day!
