Check out all of my Homemade Dog Treats!
Guys, meet Toby. Toby is my sweet little morkie who deserves to eat homemade dog treats all day, every day. Of all of the dog treat recipes that I’ve made him over the years, (including homemade dog cake), these might be his all-time favorite, because they’re packed with so many of his favorite things.
My inspiration for these began the other day when I dropped a big ol’ strawberry on the floor. Since Toby is my personal robotic vacuum, he polished that sucker up before I could even attempt to bend down and pick it up.
I panicked and grabbed my phone for what was probably my 50th random Google search that day:
Can Dogs Eat Strawberries?
Yes. Dogs can absolutely eat strawberries. They have lots of vitamins and minerals that are actually very good for dogs, but they’re also sweet, and should be served to dogs and puppies in moderation to prevent stomach aches.
Best Kind of Peanut Butter for Dogs
- All-natural peanut butter without added salt or sugar is best for dogs.
- Do not use light or sugar-free peanut butter, as those may have artificial sweeteners (such as xylitol) which is toxic to dogs.
- I like to use Teddy Smooth All-Natural Peanut Butter, which can also commonly be found in grocery stores.
Flour Alternatives for Dog Treats:
Grain: Barley, Buckwheat, Millet, Oat, Pea, Quinoa, Rice, Sorghum
Non-Grain: Chickpea, Coconut, Hazelnut, Lentil, Potato
Storage
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
- Or freeze for up to 3 months, removing them as you need them and letting them come to room temperature.
The Best Dog Treat Molds
These dog treat molds hold the shape perfectly, and makes the process even faster because you don’t have to roll out the mixture and cut shapes, (although you could)!
These are the same molds used for this recipe!
Storing Homemade Dog Treats
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
- Or freeze for up to 3 months, removing them as you need them and letting them come to room temperature.
Dog Treats as Gifts:
- These treats make fantastic gift ideas! These are the dog treat molds that I used in this recipe.
- These are even smaller treat molds and are perfect for giving in these little canisters!
- Treat-making and gift-giving is also a great activity for little ones, (with your assistance of course!)

My pup is allergic to eggs. I seen a recipe that said I can submit applesauce for eggs, would that be possible for this recipe or could I just leave the egg out?
Hey Jennifer, yes, using a little applesauce would be perfect! 🙂 Enjoy!!
Amazing, our puppy loves them!
Awesome Katie! I’m so happy to hear it!!!! Yay!!
How thick should you make the dough for cutting out
Hi Linda, if you’re going to roll this out and create cuts from it before baking, I would suggest rolling it out maybe 1/2 of an inch or so.
How many treats will this recipe make?
Hi Abby!! The top left of the recipe card has the number of servings, (just for future reference!)- This one made me 15 treats with the molds I used!
I just finished putting another batch into the oven for my 3 year old doggo 🥰
She loves them and even my family liked them (it’s human safe so why not try it).
Coming from a non-dog perspective, they taste really good, obviously not sweet or salty, but for a dog, these are amazing.
My dogs LOVED them. I might end up making these for friends when they get puppies or something.
IN REGARDS TO IT BEING STICKY:
I just got an extra half cup of flour and kept incorporating it into the dough. I’m not much of a kitchen scientist, but they still came out amazing!
Thank you so much!
Hi, Om about to make these awesome cookies for my WinnieMoo, can I sub coconut flour and Oat flour, Winnie is on a no grain diet.
And what ratio do I use?
also missing the banana😏also I thought a little ground flax would be good?
Hi Margo, here is some information about the ratio for that flour substitution. Also, flax seed va using a banana would definitely impact the texture, I think there might be too many changes to this recipe to have a successful end result, feel free to give it a try but it’s definitely straying a bit and I haven’t experimented with those kinds of changes. Good luck! https://www.glutenfreeliving.com/gluten-free-foods/ingredients/gluten-questions-and-answers/coconut-flour/
Made these for my pup today. He loves them and I love the simple ingredients in them. I dont have cute cookies cutters so I just cut into small squares. I am going to look into fun shapes!!
Thanks for the recipe! 🙂
So happy to hear it Stephanie! Thank you for taking the time to let me know! Have a great weekend! -Stephanie 🥰
Can these treats be made without peanut butter? Peanut butter & my dog don’t get along. Please let me know. Thank you. 😊
Hi Haley, I haven’t tried it, it wouldn’t be a problem except I’m not sure they would hold together well. You could give it a try? If you’re using molds it might be easier than cookie cutters. They mind bind better once they bake. I also have this apple carrot dog treat recipe that doesn’t have any peanut butter! 🙂
You could try pumpkin…mu dog loves pumkin
So I made these and a couple of other dog treats to go in my Christmas hampers for my customers (I have a dog care business)… they absolutely LOVED them! I did these with a heart cookie cutter (looked super cute)! I wish it would let me upload a photo!!! 👍🏼🐾
Hey Lucie!!
That is such great news, so happy to hear it, the heart cookie-cutter is so cute!
Does it matter what kind of oats you use? I’ve recently started making homemade treats and dog food for my pup and want to make sure I’m not giving him anything his body can’t handle. Thanks! I’m about to make these as mini holiday gifts for all the pups in my family!
Hi Emily! So sorry for he delay- I use old fashioned Quaker Oats!
